Thanks to Mad Catz, we got the chance to review another of their fine products, this one being the R.A.T.M wireless gaming mouse. An awesome piece of equipment and as stylish as they come, Mad Catz have not disappointed with the this mouse that simply, puts others to shame.

At first glance, the R.A.T.M model may look intimidating. This is not like your average mouse though, the model is a little weightier and looks to be built up in layers, going so far as to resemble some sort of contraption from a sci-fi thriller. The palm rest is a separate panel sitting on top of the device, allowing it to be manoeuvred to fit different shapes of hands. A small wing jutting from the left hand side acts as a form of thumb rest, and an additional clicking button lies just to the left of where your index finger will be, essentially granting you another command straight at your fingertips. Or at least acting as a comfortable finger rest. The 5D switch is also worth noting, as this small joystick of sorts can have up to 5 assorted functions mapped to it, eradicating the need to search for specific buttons during heated gaming sessions.

This brings us on to the R.A.T.M’s customization controls. Mad Catz generously provides some free software from their website that softwareallows complete customizing of the mouse’s buttons, using a simple drag-and-drop system. Within the program, commands can be selected from the menu and assigned to the desired button in no time at all. Up to 10 of the buttons can be assigned a function, and different presets can also be created for various games or purposes. Need a certain series of buttons for your favorite first-person shooter? Or just fancy being able to navigate between browser pages at the click of a button, without having to move your hand? Make your own layout and save it. It will be added to the preset list where you can switch between numerous different button layouts, without the hassle of having to re-assign new commands every time you change game. The settings page will also allow you to adjust the mouse’s two DPI settings, giving you complete control over how sensitive you want the device to be. To get the very most from the R.A.T.M, it is worth downloading the control-mapping software from Mad Catz’ site as it will open up hundreds (if not thousands) of opportunities for personalisation.

As mentioned above, the R.A.T.M is wireless, and has its advantages in this regard. There’s no need for a wired connection, and thus no wire to get tangled up while you game. It’s a simple case of plugging in the Bluetooth dongle provided and switching on the mouse. The dongle is actually compact enough to be stored in a compartment on the underside of the mouse when not in use, which is another reason to love it. It’s also compatible with numerous devices, including PCs, laptops, Macs, iPads and other tablets.

mcb43710_rat_m_002It’s true that with wireless appliances running on battery life that their lifespan is going to run out eventually, and will be in need of a battery change. Well, the R.A.T.M relies on 2 x AAA batteries for its juice, but is also smart enough to turn its own LED lights off in order to save power. A quick glance of the mouse’s settings page will indicate that it can run for up to a year on new batteries, so there’s no need to worry about losing power in the midst of an online gunfight anytime soon.

Mad Catz have constructed an impressive piece of technology that is made with the modern day gamer in mind. It’s designed to be a snug fit for the hand, and accommodate as many buttons as possible to help with any kind of gameplay situation. The depth of customization in terms of command mapping is staggering, as is the R.A.T.M’s power conservation ability that means gamers can game for longer. It instantly renders wired models obsolete and is one of the finest and most responsive gaming tools that you could own. If you’re looking for a wireless mouse packed with a wealth of options, look no further than Mad Catz’ R.A.T.M wireless mobile gaming mouse.
