Underworld Ascendant News
A new video concerning Underworld Ascendant has been released, with its themes now converging on the Stygian Abyss itself. This vast, labyrinthinian cave complex was one of the most memorable things about the original Ultima Underworld and the developers are looking to do it justice in Ascendant. Two developers (Tim Stellmach, the lead designer and Chris Siegel, senior producer) describe the ways in which players will be able to manipulate the Abyss, its biomes, objects and even factions to suit their needs. The Abyss will be treated as a character itself, so we’re to expect a brilliantly crafted atmosphere in which the NPCs, flora, fauna and the locations themselves will be working in harmony. That is, until the player character kicks in.
As a human suddenly waking up in the middle of the Stygian Abyss, the player has to adapt quickly if he wants to survive. As the video shows, we’ll have to think if we want to deal with the threats we’ll be facing in Ascendant – and blowing up bridges seems to be a recurring theme in this game.
Player/Abyss interaction will be extremely important too, it would seem. With the vast underground complex taking the role of one of the crucial elements in the game, we’ll have to come up with intelligent solutions on how to proceed in Underworld Ascendant. Perhaps we’ll have to flood a dry region and coincidentally let the Shroom People (The Shamblers) extend their territory. Maybe we’ll defend the territory instead and plant a botanical garden there. We’ll be able to re-direct lava flow too and block off some areas too. The possibilities are supposed to be numerous, with interesting and unpredictable outcomes.
