Virtual reality is getting closer and closer by the day. On September 15, at the Sony Computer Entertainment Japan and Asia Press Conference, Sony announced that Project Morpheus’ official name will be the ‘Playstation VR’. They also released a brand new trailer to show off their technology.

The video utilizes a holographic vision of the unit, to show off the actors’ smiles and excitement. The video features the utilization of Playstation Move controllers along with the headset. The actors demonstrate how guns will work in The London Heist, the art of waving glow sticks in Persona 4’s dance club or flirting with girls on a beach- if you’re into that kind of thing.

According to PlayStation’s official blog, Executive Vice President Masayasu Ito says “The name ‘PlayStation VR’ not only directly expresses an entirely new experience from PlayStation that allows players to feel as if they are physically inside the virtual world of a game, but it also reflects our hopes that we want our users to feel a sense of familiarity as they enjoy this amazing experience.”

“We will continue to refine the hardware from various aspects, while working alongside 3rd party developers and publishers and SCE Worldwide Studios, in order to bring content that deliver exciting experiences only made possible with VR.”

The question of software support was brought up at the Tokyo Game Show, and Sony’s President Shuhei Yoshida stated “we are developing a variety of titles. Many, we have not disclosed as yet. In showing games from different studios, there are games for core gamers for VR.”

Yoshida then confirmed several studios that are currently on “VR versions” of their IPs, including SquareEnix’s Final Fantasy XIV, Spike Chunsoft’s Dananronpa series and something with Hatsune Miku.

Square Enix, however, commented on Final Fantasy XIV at the same show was quoted as saying “this is a demo that’s been created for TGS. We don’t have any plans for an official release.”

Sony is also hoping small developers will create games for next year’s launch, commenting that the technology is “so new, you can create a really totally amazing experience with small resources if you have the right idea.” He went on to say “we still have lots of time, and I’m encouraging small developers that even if you start now, with the right idea, you can get the game done for the launch of PlayStation VR. Some developers are reacting to that. I have a very optimistic view of the variety of games and experiences available at launch.”
